Yes, you read it right! DHA, one of the omega-3 fatty acids is important right from the early days of your life, when you actually in your mother’s womb.

We have discussed earlier in detail, the type and benefits of omega-3 fatty acids. There are 2 types of Omega-3 fatty acids –EPA and DHA, which are most research and studied by the scientists for its varied health benefits.  Out of three, DHA plays a very important role in taking care of your vision. And if you keen to take care of your eye, it is important to correct the intake of omega-3 fatty acids especially DHA.

The main source of DHA would be fatty fishes like tuna, sardines, mackerel, flaxseeds, soybeans etc. As per ICMR, EPA+DHA consumption everyday should be more than 250mg to meet your basic health requirements.

And DHA needs to be taken every day, because DHA is present in the highest concentration in your retina of the eye. This concentration enhances the development of photoreceptors, specialized cells in the retina which is necessary for the proper vision.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD): Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids like DHA can help reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). According to the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition and a leading cause of vision loss among people aged        50 and older. It can lead to damage to the macula which is a small spot in the centre of the retina, thus affecting the sharp vision.

There are three types of AMD – Early, Intermediate and Late. Early AMD might not lead to vision loss, but intermediate and late show symptoms of the vision loss. Many research studies understanding the link between higher consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and protection against AMD has seen positive results. In one of the study, EPA+DHA have been shown to be strongly associated with a reduced risk for late AMD.

According to the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, dry eye is a condition that occurs when the eye does not produce tears properly, or when the tears are not of the correct consistency and evaporate too quickly.  This is a very common condition nowadays, due to increased and continuous exposure to computer screens.

Dry Eyes can be caused due to damage of nerves that help maintain the healthy cornea. DHA can help repair these nerves in the process and may help reduce the eye dryness.

Glaucoma: EPA and DHA levels are very low in person suffering from glaucoma as compared to the normal individual.

Diabetic Retinopathy: Uncontrollable blood sugar can sometimes affect your eyesight by damaging your nerves. Hence, important to keep doing regular eye-check up and take fish oil supplements to help prevent any eye-related disease.
