Where sex and tech come together

I sent in my picture …

September 29th, 2006

Ayep. For a minimum $50 donation, you can go through the gallery of naked racks (male and female!) and try to guess which one is mine. Except I just submitted it so it won’t be up for a few days yet. *ulp* Too late to retract and put on a shirt…

Scheduling Sex Is Sizzling Hot

September 29th, 2006

Wired News: Scheduling Sex Is Sizzling Hot
Considering how much finagling and finessing people will do to make time for an online lover, it surprises me when I talk to people who dislike the idea of scheduling sex in offline relationships.

In fact, scheduling sex — not just time to be together with the understanding that sex might arise, but actually saying “we will start nookie at 9 a.m. Saturday” — is so taboo, some couples refuse to do it.

My brain has dumb priorities

September 18th, 2006

On the plane last week I was asked what country Mt. Everest is in and I couldn’t remember. “Africa?” I said questioningly, knowing that Africa is a continent, not a country; no, that’s Mt. Kilimanjaro, said the cute dad with whom I was having this conversation. “I’m mortified that I can’t remember — China pops into my head but honestly — that’s one of those things I have to look up when I need it,” I told him.

But last night I was able to sing from memory:

Holding you
Is a feeling I never outgrew
And though each and every part of me has tried
Only you can fill that space inside
And there’s no sense pretending
My heart
It’s not mending
Just when I thought I was over you
Just when I thought I could stand on my own
Oh baby
Those mem’ries come crashing through
And I can’t go on without
You

I eventually remembered that Mt. Everest is in Nepal. Or wait, Tibet. Oh dear. So I looked it up and found out it’s in both.

Sex, Lies and Cyberspace

September 9th, 2006

Wired News: Sex, Lies and Cyberspace
I’ve been away from home for almost a month, so I didn’t know until this week that the September issue of O, The Oprah Magazine includes an investigative piece about, well, investigations. Specifically, using keystroke loggers and other snooping software to gather evidence of infidelity.

Whether such spousal spying is ethical is, like most affairs of the heart, largely situational. It’s not necessarily legal, either — evidence gathered through cyber spying may not be admissible in court in a divorce case, because only the government is allowed to place wiretaps without a court order. Meanwhile, it’s no secret that cyberspace provides a false sense of security for many an illicit liaison.

Various answers to The Question: How has the internet challenged your previously held ideas about fidelity and commitment in a sexual relationship?

Another talented friend gets a book out

September 5th, 2006

One of my funny friends has a new book out: Stop the Show!: A History of Insane Incidents and Absurd Accidents in the Theater: Books: Brad Schreiber

Unlike the last one, I haven’t read this one in manuscript — I had wait for publication like everyone else. But Brad is an expert in theater and in humor (and, dare I say, in Insane Incidents and in Absurb Accidents), so it’s bound to be good.

Here’s the blurb he sent me:

The first collection of theater’s greatest blunders, from the West End and Broadway to the lowliest amateur theater, Stop the Show! revels in ruined lines, dangerous scenery, rude theatergoers, performers sabotaging each other and more.

Among the outrageous and mind-boggling events during live performances:

Richard Burton, after an afternoon of drinking with his brothers, accidentally urinates through his tights while swordfighting Michael Redgrave at Stratford-upon-Avon.

The Second City Toronto member who took LSD for the first time feels its effects hours later…in the middle of a comedy sketch, posing as a taxi cab driver.

A homeless woman climbs onstage during a production of Cats on Broadway, rubs up against stunned, costumed performers and begins singing off-key.

In London’s intimate Bush Theatre, an actor finds himself onstage with a petrified burglar who sneaked inside the building to rob it, not knowing it was a theatre.

An April Fool’s Day announcement in a Broadway theatre, claiming that Glenn Close, Richard Dreyfus and Gene Hackman all have understudies going on for them creates a mass exodus from the theatre before the audience can learn it’s a joke.

“Mr. Schreiber’s book of anecdotes should be deposited in every dressing room both on and off Broadway.” –Eric Bogosian

I have my own podcast feed now

September 5th, 2006

Look what I found. I have no idea how long this has been live, but it looks like a direct feed to the Sex Drive Podcast:

Sex Drive Podcast (feed)

Naturally, I find this the weekend that I couldn’t get a podcast out (first time since we started ‘em; I think this would have been episode 30).

But if you’re interested, I’m sure you can download past episodes. Generally the podcast is short, 7 - 10 minutes, and includes interview snippets and behind-the-scenes commentary about the week’s column topic. But sometimes it has other stuff.

No word from Willie or his friends. Yet.
