It made me laugh when I saw your “Standard Scale of Creepiness”. I have always referred to it as “Creepy Factor”. I use the same formula though. : )

I loved example 2. I so do not miss dial-up. I started off with a manual dial 300bps modem on a Radio Shack Coco with 4k of memory. ~_~

Anyone remember the ASCII animation program called “The Draw”?

I'm trying to remember the name of the "woman" whose pictures were demo to sell the IBM 1403 printers. You ran the program and it showed a 11X17 ASCII picture of her in a dress, with a caption at the bottom saying "To see more of (name), rerun with Sense Switch A". When you did, there was a picture of here in a bikini, with a caption "To see even more of (name), rerun with Sense Switch B". When you did there was another picture that was bare down to just above her boobs, and then there was a sign covering from there to just below her crotch saying "Sorry, no matter what the salesman told you, you can't do EVERYTHING with the 1403." I think it was Edi th, but I'm not sure.

Dial-up modems don’t excite me, since my earliest experience with them was at work in 1971, when we were working with old Teletype 110ASR’s. That’s right, folks, 110 baud. Compare that to the 56,000 baud that we think is so slow today. 110 vs. 56,000. More than 500 times faster than what I started out using. And the ASR’s were the top of the line, because you could punch paper tape and it would send things automatically from those tapes.
