A more homebrew option might be to simply put the vacuum cleaner itself in a different room and extend the hose and possibly on/off - garage sales are packed with old vacuums ready to slaughter which would probably work once the filter/bag comes off. Not perhaps for the casual user, but to those for whom it becomes a favorite and a staple item in the toy chest it sure seems like a solvable problem tech wise. At the very least, having quiet vacuum out of the wall would sure catch some geek points for effort..
